“As people living with disabilities, we are so used to being excluded in such a way that we’ve unintentionally started excluding ‘normal’ people,” said Denise Van Wyk, a community member in Kimberly, during a fellow-led community engagement in the Northern Cape.
Denise was highlighting the issues facing people with disabilities and raising questions on possible solutions. The engagement was one of five, as we’ve engaged with communities in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West, and KwaZulu-Natal.

These dialogues were facilitated by our fellows like Andile Ncube, Saidy Brown, Mary Selona, Bernard Chiguvare, Zanele Msibi, Pinky Langa, Thando Masango, Nonkululeko Hlongwane-Mhlongo, Siyabonga Hlongwa Nzimande, Sthembiso Ntuli, Kealeboga Ramaru, Seatile Motsamai, Blantina Senwamadi, Sekwaila Bopape, Mmabatho Langa, Nomfundo Zama, Cincinantia Lebjane, and Thandeka Masilela.
Other issues that were raised during these engagements were both urgent and complex: communities spoke of dry taps and water shortages, food insecurity, unhealthy diets, scars left by mining, inclusion and justice, unemployment, and the continued mistreatment of migrants.
