Carel Masemola

Is an optometrist, public health scholar, and academic leader from Makgane Village in Limpopo Province, currently serving as a Lecturer and Undergraduate Programme Coordinator in the Department of Optometry at the University of the Free State. His work sits at the intersection of eye health, public health, and health systems strengthening, with a focus on advancing equitable access to quality eye care for underserved communities. He holds a Bachelor of Optometry from the University of Limpopo, an Ocular Diagnostic Certificate from the University of Johannesburg, a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health and a BA Honours in Psychology from the University of South Africa, and a Master of Public Health (Cum Laude) from the University of Pretoria. He is currently completing a PhD in Public Health, focusing on eye health promotion and health systems strengthening. With over 15 years of experience across the public and private health sectors, his expertise spans eye health promotion, health equity, mental health, climate change and health, visual impairment, and quality of life research. His work includes leading student-led community outreach programmes, supervising postgraduate research, and contributing to national and international collaborations addressing underserved populations. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, a lifetime member of the Golden Key International Honour Society, and a recipient of the 2023 Mail & Guardian Top 200 Young South African Visionaries Award in the Health Category. His work is guided by a vision of a socially just world where equitable access to quality eye care and health services is guaranteed for all communities.
