Karen Hendricks

Karen Hendricks is a spatial justice activist, making an indelible mark on South Africa through her dedicated work. Her journey as a leader began in 2018 when she was elected by members of the land and housing movement, Reclaim The City. She later became a coordinating committee leader and her dedication to the cause led to her involvement in occupying a state building in Woodstock, Cape Town, where she has resided for more than six years. Karen’s activism is rooted in her personal experiences of eviction and gentrification, which have affected her, her family, and generations of residents in her community. She envisions an inclusive city marked by equality and gender balance, where poor and working-class women of colour hold pivotal roles in decision-making. Her aspiration involves fostering collaboration between women and men to collectively shape the city’s future. Beyond her involvement in the occupation, Karen spearheads skills-based and political education programmes for occupiers and activists, including the elderly. Her initiatives aim to confront health disparities and propel the cause of health equity, especially for those residing in overcrowded, underserved conditions lacking essential services.
