Sindiso Tutu

Is a qualified Professional Nurse with over 22 years’ experience in public health. He holds a Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery, a degree in Primary Health, and two postgraduate qualifications in Management. Sindiso has dedicated his career to improving healthcare access and outcomes for marginalised communities, including people living in informal settlements and foreign nationals. He has worked in various health settings within the Western Cape Department of Health, with a focus on community-based healthcare, management, and addressing the social determinants of health. Currently, Sindiso serves as the Facility Manager at Kraaifontein Community Health Centre (CHC), which provides healthcare services to around 800-900 patients daily. For over 15 years, he has been actively involved in social justice issues, beginning with his work in the Treatment Action Campaign, and has consistently advocated for healthcare rights regardless of legal or social status. In one key initiative, beginning in 2020, he has partnered with three school principals to establish a monthly family planning outreach programme to reduce teenage pregnancies. This innovative project has attracted national attention, leading to the establishment of a youth wing at the CHC with support from both national and provincial governments. Sindiso’s vision is to expand this initiative to rural and underserved areas, particularly to reach young women in villages with limited access to reproductive health services.
