Dr Amilcar Juggernath

Is a public health medicine specialist working in Johannesburg. Originally from Chatsworth, Durban, his work sits at the intersection of public health, health policy, and systems reform, with a particular focus on strengthening South Africa’s health system through the implementation of National Health Insurance (NHI). He is committed to improving equitable access to quality healthcare and advancing structural reforms that enable better population health outcomes. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and a Master of Medicine in Community Health from the University of the Witwatersrand, a Diploma in HIV Management, and is a Fellow of the College of Public Health Medicine of South Africa. His expertise spans health systems strengthening, policy development, accreditation frameworks, and quality improvement in healthcare delivery. Dr Juggernath currently serves in the NHI Branch of the National Department of Health as a Public Health Medicine Specialist: Accreditation, where he develops and implements processes to accredit health facilities to ensure acceptable standards of care. He is also an extraordinary lecturer in the Department of Public Health Medicine at the University of Pretoria. He has contributed to developing a national accreditation framework for the NHI Fund and has played a leadership role as Scientific Chair of Public Health Association of South Africa Conferences, curating platforms for public health knowledge exchange. Grounded in values of solidarity and social justice, he envisions a society free from prejudice, inequity, and structural barriers where quality healthcare is accessible to all and systems are designed to support dignity, wellbeing, and collective progress.
