Dr. James Van Duuren

Is a Public Health Advocate and Medical Professional who is the Deputy Secretary of the People’s Health Movement. He holds an MBChB from the University of Cape Town. James is deeply committed to public health, advocacy for primary health care and health systems reform. He helps lead civil society groups in their analysis and activism on health policies, and advocates for the role of community health workers within an inclusive, pro-public universal healthcare system. During COVID-19, James served as the Coordinator for the COVID-19 People’s Coalition, managing non-governmental organisations’ responses, including food distribution, financial support, and education campaigns. James is the former President and Vice-President of Student Health and Welfare Centre’s Organisation Health, where he led primary healthcare services and student education in resource-limited settings. His most significant contribution comes from his work at the People’s Health Movement, where he has effectively highlighted the vital role of community health workers in the health system and promoted community autonomy by establishing numerous health forums. James is passionate about equity, community ownership, and impactful work. He believes in creating a socially just world where well-being takes precedence over profit.
